The Proper Way to Perform Wudu According to the Sunnah

The Proper Way to Perform Wudu According to the Sunnah

1. The Order of Performing Wudu

Allah SWT has outlined the sequence of wudu in the Qur’an:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ

"O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe over your heads and wash your feet up to the ankles." (Surah Al-Ma’idah: 6)

Based on this verse and the hadiths of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the correct steps for wudu are:

  1. Reciting Bismillah before beginning wudu.
  2. Intending wudu in the heart.
  3. Washing both hands three times.
  4. Rinsing the mouth and cleaning the nose three times.
  5. Washing the face three times.
  6. Washing the arms up to the elbows three times.
  7. Wiping the head and ears once.
  8. Washing the feet up to the ankles three times.
  9. Maintaining the correct order, ensuring no steps are skipped.

2. Reciting Bismillah

Before starting wudu, it is recommended to say:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

"Bismillah" (In the name of Allah).

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"There is no wudu for the one who does not mention the name of Allah over it."
(Hadith by Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and Ahmad – classified as hasan by Al-Albani)

3. Intention (Niyyah) of Wudu

The intention of wudu is made in the heart, in accordance with the purpose of purifying oneself, such as:

نَوَيْتُ الْوُضُوْءَ لِرَفْعِ الْحَدَثِ الأَصْغَرِ لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى

"I intend to perform wudu to remove minor impurities for the sake of Allah Ta'ala."

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Indeed, actions are judged by intentions."
(Hadith by Bukhari & Muslim)

4. Washing Both Hands

It is recommended to wash both hands three times before starting wudu.

Uthman ibn Affan (RA) reported:

"Then he poured water over both hands three times and washed them."
(Hadith by Bukhari & Muslim)

5. Rinsing the Mouth and Cleaning the Nose

  • Mouth: Rinse thoroughly to remove food particles.
  • Nose: Inhale water into the nostrils (istinsyaq) and then blow it out (istintsar) three times.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"When one of you performs wudu, let him draw water into his nose and then expel it."
(Hadith by Bukhari & Muslim)

6. Washing the Face

Wash the entire face three times, from the forehead to the chin and from ear to ear.

7. Washing the Arms Up to the Elbows

Wash the right arm up to the elbow three times, followed by the left arm three times.

8. Wiping the Head and Ears

  • Head: Wipe the head using wet hands.
  • Ears: Wipe the ears using the remaining moisture on the hands.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"The ears are part of the head."
(Hadith by Ibn Majah & Ahmad)

9. Washing the Feet Up to the Ankles

Wash the right foot up to the ankle three times, then the left foot three times.

10. Observing the Correct Order (Tartib)

Each step must be performed in the correct sequence as prescribed by the Sunnah.

11. The Supplication After Wudu

After completing wudu, it is recommended to recite the following supplication:

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

"I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone without any partner. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger."
(Hadith by Muslim)

The Virtue of This Supplication

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Whoever performs wudu and then recites this supplication, the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him, and he may enter through whichever one he wishes."
(Hadith by Muslim)
