Authentic Duas for Breaking Fast (Iftar) – Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Authentic Duas for Breaking Fast with Dalil and References

Introduction

Breaking fast is a special moment during fasting. It is not only a time to nourish the body after a day of restraint but also a significant opportunity to make supplications to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ taught several duas for breaking the fast, but not all commonly recited duas have strong hadith evidence. This article explores the most authentic dua for breaking fast, along with its references.

1. The Most Authentic Dua for Breaking Fast

Dzahaba adh-dhama'u wabtallati al-'uruqu...

Arabic Text:

ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ

Transliteration:
Dzahaba adh-dhama'u wabtallati al-'uruqu wa tsabatal-ajru in shaa' Allah.

Meaning:
"The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is established, if Allah wills."

Dalil and References:

This dua is recorded in multiple hadith collections and classified as hasan (good) by scholars:

  • Abu Dawud (2357)
  • Ad-Daruquthni in his Sunan (2279)
  • Al-Bazzar in Al-Musnad (5395)
  • Al-Baihaqi in As-Sunan Al-Kubra (1390)

Hadith Authentication:
This hadith was graded hasan by Shaykh Al-Albani in Irwa' al-Ghalil (4/39).

Conclusion:
This dua has a strong chain of transmission and is the most authentic supplication for breaking fast.

2. A Popular but Weak Dua for Breaking Fast

Allahumma inni laka sumtu...

Arabic Text:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي لَكَ صُمْتُ وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ وَعَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ

Transliteration:
Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika aamantu wa 'alayka tawakkaltu wa 'ala rizqika aftartu.

Meaning:
"O Allah, I have fasted for You, I believe in You, I put my trust in You, and with Your provision, I break my fast."

Dalil and References:

This dua is widely recited, but the hadith supporting it is weak (dha'if). Scholars have commented on its weak chain of narration:

  • Reported by Abu Dawud, Ibn Sunni, and Al-Hakim, but the chain is weak.
  • Shaykh Albani in Irwa' al-Ghalil (4/38) classified the hadith as dha'if (weak).
  • Ibn Qudamah in Al-Mughni also considered the chain of narration unreliable.

Conclusion:
Since this dua is weak, it is preferable to use the first dua, which is more authentic.

Conclusion

When choosing a dua for breaking fast, Muslims should prioritize those with strong hadith support. Among the duas commonly recited, "Dzahaba adh-dhama'u..." is the most authentic and should be practiced more frequently. On the other hand, "Allahumma inni laka sumtu..." has a weak chain of narration, so it is better to avoid it if one seeks the most reliable supplications.

May this article help us enhance our fasting worship and gain more blessings. May Allah accept our fast and deeds. Ameen.
